So another week spent in the jungle of Costa Rica, filming, reforesting, and generally enjoying the spectacular nature that surrounds us 24 hours a day. I am not however going to discuss the intricate details of the place in which I find myself yet again. I would instead like to discuss something that has been on my mind of late and it is something I have come across repeatedly over the past 6 months of my travels, this week being no exception.
I have found that I am again and again coming across people who have reached a point in their life where what they are doing professionally is not fulfilling them. It is not that they are necessarily bored of otherwise unable to carry out the practical requirements of their work, merely that the end result of what they are focusing their energy on is not having a positive affect on the world around them.
What has inspired me about these people is that they often recognise that despite the unsustainable and often damaging nature of their previous work, the associated skills they have developed can easily be directed toward something sustainable and positive.
I met a guy this week for example that worked in Packaging design and marketing who had for years successfully worked for large corporations who operate with very unsustainable and unethical practices. As he became more aware of the issues that stem from these corporations his ever developing moral compass guided him to make a decision to only work for people who have a sustainable and positive ethos that serves to benefit the wider population, something which he was in fact doing at the point I met him.
This is just one example of a great number of people I have come across who have similar stories of recognizing the value of their skills and focusing them on something they believe in. For me this further highlights that a change in perspective is indeed taking place, and that it is often within a so-called ‘problem’ that lays the solution. In a world in which positive change is occurring ever more frequently, it is important to see potential of every single person, no matter where they have been before, and knowing that the real solutions lay within them.
